A Lifetime on The Market

Marcus Rowlerson and Martin Fry

Marcus Rowlerson and Martin Fry

We bid farewell (or do we?) to our friend and colleague Martin Fry, who has announced his retirement after 27 years on the Market and a decade with Le Marché. His grandson also works for the firm - read more here.

How has the job changed?

Martin: In general, people have got lazier. I worked 24 /7 sometimes!

Marcus: Martin would never say no. He would always get me out of trouble on a Saturday afternoon or a Sunday morning if I needed him to deliver to a VIP or unlock the unit.

Martin: I’ve really enjoyed the teamwork. You can have a good laugh. When I first met Marcus he asked if I could help him for a little while - and I stayed for 10 years! He won’t let me go! This is the longest job I’ve had.

How many times have you retired?

Martin: Three times - this will be four. I started as a driver, then a packer, then transport manager. I like to work. But if I do have time off I like to go fishing down in Kent - carp fishing in the lakes.

What’s it been like to watch Le Marché grow?

Martin: It has got really busy.

Marcus: I've always thought of Martin is like the Ravens at the Tower of London. When he goes the whole firm will go.
