1st August 2025

It will be an amazing August this year. In the UK, many crops are running 2 to 3 weeks early. Spring was very mild, summer was early and the wind didn’t blow the blossom off – so anything from damsons and apples and pears are producing incredible crops.

The English cherry crop is one of the best ever this year but finishes in August to be replaced by US / Canada.

UK plums begin - Opal then Victoria then Marjorie’s seedling. French Mirabelle and Reine de Claude. Also Metis red-flesh. Blood peaches and blood nectarines in their prime.

Muscat grapes from France recommended.

Early to mid August will see the true Sollies French figs.

English apples and pears begin this month with Discovery. Also cobnuts.

Melons include Charentais from Meffre – super sweet from Cavillon in France; Piel de Sapo Melon from Villaconejos Spain, prized for their sweetness.

Fantastic tomatoes from Provence.

Courgettes of all kinds.

We should see the first squashes of the year.

Lovely Lautrec purple garlic.

Beans include Borlotti and Coco de Paimpol.

Other UK veg includes bunched carrots, Hispi cabbage.

Traditional broccoli and tenderstem has been proving difficult because of the lack of rain.

END OF SEASON

-Green almonds

-English peas and broad beans

- Jersey Royals
