MARKET REPORT FOR OCTOBER 2023

Ceps have started. Also in season chanterelles, girolles, caesar, black trompette.

There are amazing apples , pears, citrus, roots and squashes. The citrus season is at the very start, but Miyagawa clementines are already with us. Later this month we expect buddha’s hand, bergamot, cedra. Other lines include yuzu, citron caviar, finger lime, kumquat, kabossu and Meyer lemon.

Fantastic apples right now, including Kissabel and the iconic brands from France such as Mouneyrac and Vassout. UK varieties include Gala, Worcester, russets, Cox. UK Comice pears are underway. Other recommended fruits include quince and Turkish figs.

For vegetables, Brussel sprouts have begun. This is a good month for kales and Jerusalem artichokes, Helianthis (artichokes mid-October), Kohl Rabi, Romanesco, carrots (sand, purple, white, yellow, Chantenay). Piccolo parsnips have begun. Beetroots include Crapaudine and candy. Other roots include celtuce, chervil, salsify, crosnes (mid month). Radish varieties include breakfast, pink meat, blue meat, green meat. Onions include Roscoff, Cevennes, cipollini, grelot.

Salads include the start of the Italian radicchios. Tardivo is expected late this month. Puntarella and Cime di Rapa are both available.

This is a good month for wet walnuts. Chestnuts have begun - available in the shell, shelled or vacuum packed. Cobnuts are dried and brown. Foraged ingredients include Scotts Pine, Douglas Fir, Crab Apple, Rosehips.
